Why I love cricket
If you think that cricket is boring, then don’t worry, because you are in the majority I assure you. I’m one of those weirdos that really like cricket, in fact I’d go as far to say that I love it. When I tell people this, the most common response is usually “Why?!?”. In this post, I will answer this for all of you who are wondering.
Firstly, I don’t think there are many better things in life than spending the day outside in good weather with great people. The cricket itself is more the supporting cast, rather than the main star. I think back to the times when I have enjoyed playing cricket the most, and they all have one thing in common — my teammates weren’t just teammates, they were actual mates.
Secondly, are the memories on the field that cricket produces. This is not something that is just unique to cricket but is true of all sport; when you think back to those times that just put a smile on your face because in that moment the only emotion running through your body was euphoria. However, I do think that cricket has more of these moments than other sports. I look back fondly on occasions such as bowling the opposition out for 45 in the under 11's cup final only to be bowled out for 40 ourselves, taking 4 wickets on my first team debut when I was 16, or batting out 27 overs for the ninth wicket to secure a draw.
Finally, batting and bowling are really really fun. Batting I’m sure you can understand, who doesn’t love trying to hit a ball as hard as they can (although there is of course more to cricket than just this). Bowling is more of an art, watching a ball bounce and move off the pitch whilst the batter struggles to get their bat anywhere close to the ball is beauty in its own right, and explains why millions of people have watched videos of some of the greatest balls ever bowled.
I don’t expect you to be a cricket convert now, but I hope you might now understand why some people enjoy spending their entire weekend standing in a field wearing white clothing.
